Mid Term Exam Study Sheet

What should you expect to be on the midterm exam? The exam, made up of 70 multiple choice questions and one essay response which will account for 10% of your overall grade.

How does this break down?

Vocabulary & Grammar – 30 multiple choice questions

Vocabulary: 15 questions
§ Synonyms & Antonym
§ Part of Speech
§ Definition/Usage

Grammar: 15 questions
§ Punctuation
§ Literary Devices
§ Run On/Fragmented Sentences
§ Pronoun/Antecedents

Literature 24 multiple choice questions that will focus on reading passages from a short story, John Steinbeck and Shakespeare. Although we have read from two of these authors, we have not touched on these particular works. Therefore, you will want to be able to apply our lessons on themes, symbols and characters to answer the questions.

Cold Reads

You will be asked to read thee different types of literature and answer questions that require close reading and analysis of the text including:

§ Poetry – 8 multiple choice questions reflecting interpretation of a sonnet presented.

§ Non- Fiction – 8 multiple choice questions requiring close reading techniques of the article

§ Fiction (short story) 8 multiple choice questions requiring close reading techniques of the story

Essay Question The good news? Only one (1) essay question and we’ll be dedicating a full block to writing the essay on Friday, April 3rd.

The bad news? It’s worth 30 points of the overall exam score!

The topic of the essay question may focus on one or more of the themes of the novels, the symbols or messages and what they represent to society, or the impact man has on society (either as an individual or as part of a community). Be sure to use your time to preplan your writing before beginning to write. The use of examples from the text(s) (ie. Quotes, paraphrasing scenes, reference to symbols or themes) will help your score! – hint, hint.

So…get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, read over your notes, study your vocabulary & grammar packets – and…
